research institute of nuclear engineering, university of fukui
(fukui, tsuruga, japan)
The Research Institute of Nuclear Engineering of the University of Fukui was established in 2009 with a mission to perform world-class research and education in all areas related to nuclear energy. Fukui prefecture, located on the coast of the Sea of Japan, is home to 4 nuclear power plants (13 reactors in total), the prototype FBR Monju and the ATR Fugen (now under decommissioning).
The institute’s research portfolio includes Reactor Physics, Thermal Hydraulics, Nuclear Fuel, Materials Science, Decommissioning Technology, Disaster Prevention and Risk Management, as well as Radiation Protection and Hygiene.
The Japanese university system is similar to the US system: 4 years of undergraduate education (B.Sc. degree) and 5 years for graduate school (2 years for M.Sc., 3 years more for Ph.D.). The Institute presently offers a graduate degree in nuclear engineering. Besides our academic education, we also offer non-academic Education & Training internships, mostly focusing on candidates from countries in South and East Asia.
Offer to candidates:
The Institute offers the opportunity to perform research as part of the requirements for an academic degree (M.Sc. and Ph.D. level), with a minimum stay of 3 months. We have research subjects ranging from reactor physics, to thermal hydraulics, safety evaluation, risk communication, seismic evaluation, to biological effects of radiation. If desired, there is a possibility to do all degree work in the Institute.
This is your opportunity to spend time in the wonderful world that is Japan! Endulge in the lifestyle of green tea and karaoke, of Mt. Fuji and bullet trains. Tsuruga is near the cultural capital Kyoto and the metropolis of Osaka. Knowledge of the Japanese language is not required, but candidates must be sufficiently proficient in English.

To give candidates some idea of the diversity of internship topics that we can offer, we have listed below some examples of recent internship topics:
- Uncertainty analysis of the prototype FBR Monju with JENDL-4.0 and ERANOS (11months)
- Analysis of the thermal stratification in the upper plenum of the prototype FBR Monju (9 months)
- Analysis of structural change in stainless steel due to neutron irradiation (5 months)
- Potential of re-criticality in PWR spent fuel pools (5 months)
- Analysis of CsI release during the Fukushima accident (3 months)
- Application of radiation physics: nuclear emergency preparedness and particle therapy (9 months)
