The Jožef Stefan Institute is the leading Slovenian scientific research institute, covering a broad spectrum of basic and applied research. The staff of about 820 specializes in natural sciences, life sciences and engineering.

The subjects concern production and control technologies, communication and computer technologies, knowledge technologies, biotechnologies, new materials, environmental technologies, nanotechnologies, and nuclear engineering.

The mission of the Jožef Stefan Institute is the accumulation - and dissemination - of knowledge at the frontiers of natural science and technology to the benefit of society at large through the pursuit of education, learning, research, and development of high technology at the highest international levels of excellence.

The Reactor Engineering Division of JSI was founded in 1984 although its scientific origin lies back in the history of the Jožef Stefan Institute. Today, the Reactor Engineering Division plays a leading role on the nuclear energy stage in Slovenia. The Reactor Engineering Division activities are focused mainly on fundamental and applied nuclear engineering and safety research, with special emphasis on the safe operation of the Krško nuclear power plant. The research topics include:

• Thermal-hydrodynamics
• Modeling of basic thermal-hydrodynamical phenomena
• Modeling of severe accidents
• Thermal-hydrodynamical safety analyses
• Structural mechanics
• Simulations of intergranular cracking
• Deterministic and probabilistic structural safety analyses
• Reliability, industrial hazard and risk
• Risk and uncertainty analyses
• Probabilistic safety analyses

Most of the research activities are conducted jointly with partners abroad through several forms of international cooperation and multilateral projects. In addition, the division's staff significantly contributes to the graduate program in Nuclear Engineering, which is jointly conducted by the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, and the Jožef Stefan Institute. JSI has been an active member of ENEN Association since its beginings.
