Background and purpose.
INBEx (Institute for Nuclear Business Excellence) has developed the nuclear business simulation Fermi to train decision-making and to improve communication across disciplines decision-makers in the nuclear industry. This course is now offered to academic teachers for competence development, as part of the NUSHARE EU project, coordinated by ENEN. The event is hosted by the Swedish Centre for Nuclear Technology.
Instead of traditional presentation-based training, Fermi is centered around simulation of real-life challenges. In Fermi, the participants try out what it is like to be the CEO of a nuclear power plant. The team defines a business strategy, takes strategic decisions (upgrade or keep in present condition?), plan regular work like outages, perform improvement projects, and last, but not least, handle a variety of unexpected events. This simulation was originally developed as part of the leadership program of a utility. Today, it is used all over the industry, including supply chain companies and regulators. It has been used with excellent client satisfaction for executives as well as younger potentials.

Some testimonies from participants:
"The “Challenges to Nuclear Safety” training course for regulators presents a very worthwhile experience since it combines both simulation sessions with classroom sessions and discussions. The simulation sessions are highly plausible since they are based upon actual operating experience and events from plants around the world. The quality of all presentations and feedback of the simulation sessions only added to the overall learning experience."
M. van Haesendonck, BelV, Belgium
"The simulation was an intense, engaging and almost addictive learning experience. Time constrained team decision making in changing economic and technical scenarios cannot be taught otherwise. Its good design and pace ensured the immersion and cooperation of the participants."
Carlos Blanco Hortal, CSN, Spain
"The 2 day course was an exceptional experience, combining thought provoking presentations and discussion with realistic scenarios. The value of the course is enhanced by the experience of the cohort and the eminent position of the guest speakers. I have utilised the thought provocative material within days of returning to the workplace."
